Students learned more when they took notes by hand vs using a laptop. Writing is slower and therefore one needs to process and compress information in order to capture it. If you type fast enough, you are not processing information. 1
If notes are taken indiscriminately or by mindlessly transcribing content, as is more likely the case on a laptop than when notes are taken longhand, the benefit disappears.
